‘India will continue to pay tariff, situation is changed now’: US President

US Tariff on India

Washington: After the U.S. Supreme Court declared the additional tariffs illegal, President Donald Trump reacted strongly and announced the imposition of a 10% global tariff on all countries.

According to a foreign news agency, President Trump has signed an executive order regarding the new tariffs, under which the 10% tariff will take effect immediately.

He said that previous trade agreements will remain in place; however, the method of their implementation will be changed.

Details reveal that the Supreme Court of the United States delivered its verdict with a 6–3 majority, ruling that the law under which President Trump had imposed the additional tariffs was meant specifically for national emergencies and could not be used to enforce such broad-based trade duties. The court clarified that the relevant law does not grant the president unilateral authority to impose large-scale additional tariffs.

Reacting sharply to the ruling, President Trump described it as “extremely disappointing” and “shameful.” He alleged that some judges were acting under political influence and that the court had come under the sway of foreign interests.

He stated, “I can do whatever I want,” and indicated that other legal avenues would be pursued. According to President Trump, tariffs related to national security under Section 301 will remain in place.

When asked whether the U.S. would have to refund the money collected through tariffs, President Trump said that a legal battle might also be fought over the matter.

U.S. Vice President JD Vance also termed the court’s decision as “lawlessness,” stating that the ruling clearly amounts to a violation of the law.

President Trump reiterated his stance regarding India as well. He said that in the past, India had benefited from trade with the United States, but the situation has now changed.

He stated that the U.S. is not paying tariffs to India; rather, India is paying tariffs to the U.S. He described it as a fair agreement. He further said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a dignified personality; however, the trade deal is now in America’s interest and has been finalized.

President Trump had previously warned that if the court declared the tariffs illegal, there would be far-reaching consequences, and his recent action is now being viewed in that context.
