RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan was shifted from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad under tight security on Friday, following a Supreme Court order.
Imran Khan’s convoy left Adiala Jail through Gate No. 1 and headed towards the hospital, located about 25 kilometres away. Security officials had cleared two routes for the transfer, including Adiala Road and the Gorakhpur route, while the former premier was provided A-plus security.
According to sources, Khan is expected to be taken to the fourth floor of the hospital’s F Block, an executive floor. Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was also treated in the same block.
The fourth floor has facilities for specialised tests for patients with kidney and liver-related conditions. Khan is also reported to have high blood pressure, along with eye-related problems and muscle pain.
Meanwhile, security was tightened around the hospital ahead of his arrival, with a heavy contingent of police deployed in the area. Authorities also removed vehicles parked along roads near the hospital using lifters as part of the security arrangements.
Police subsequently blocked roads leading to the hospital with barriers and diverted traffic. Islamabad Inspector General of Police also visited the hospital to review the security arrangements.
Hospital authorities have made special preparations for Khan’s medical examination. Upon arrival, he will undergo an initial assessment in the emergency department by a team of six specialist doctors.
Doctors will then decide whether Khan needs to be admitted to the hospital. If admission is deemed necessary, hospital officials have already completed arrangements to facilitate his treatment and stay.
The transfer follows a Supreme Court directive ordering authorities to move Khan to Shifa International Hospital within two days for a medical examination.
Imran Khan, who remains in custody in connection with multiple cases, has been held at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
