Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General (IG) informed the provincial cabinet regarding the amendments to the Police Act that the relevant amendments had already been declared null and void by the Peshawar High Court.
According to sources, while presenting his position regarding the proposed Police Act at the cabinet meeting, the IG said that the Peshawar High Court had declared null and void the amendments related to taking powers away from the IG, while the Chief Secretary also confirmed the IG’s position.
According to sources, the IG said that the purpose of making the Police Act 2017 was to empower the police and make them accountable, while under the proposed Police Act, some powers of the IG have been transferred to the Chief Minister.
It may be recalled that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act 2026, under which the provincial government will have the authority to withdraw the services of the IG and other police officers belonging to the federal government in case of unsatisfactory performance.
Provincial Information Minister Shafi Jan said that under the proposed law, a Police Policy Board will be established, headed by the Chief Minister, while the Police Operations Board will be headed by the IG. Regional Investigation Officers will be appointed in the province, while the appointment and transfers of Regional Police Officers and District Police Officers will be carried out under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rules of Business 1985.
He said that policy and operational matters of the police would be separated, all existing Dispute Resolution Councils would be dissolved and reconstituted under the new law, while the proposed law is an important step towards introducing significant reforms in the police system.
