ICC members seek to ease tensions between Pakistan and India

ISLAMABAD: Members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) are reportedly hoping for a truce between the Pakistan and Indian cricket boards amid escalating tensions.

The ICC meetings began in Dubai on Wednesday, with the Chief Executives’ Committee holding its opening session. While the official agenda did not include the Pakistan-India dispute, discussions surrounding the Asia Cup controversy are expected to dominate informal conversations.

Officials suggest that the issue could surface on the sidelines of the ICC Board meeting scheduled for Friday, even though it is not listed as a formal item.

Much like the strained relations between their governments, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have remained at odds. The recent Asia Cup in the UAE saw tensions peak after reports emerged that Indian players were instructed by their board not to shake hands with Pakistani cricketers—a directive allegedly given to captain Suryakumar Yadav.

The situation worsened when ICC imposed fines and penalties on several players, including Haris Rauf, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Sahibzada Farhan, for making politically charged gestures and comments during the matches.

Adding to the strain was a controversy over the Asia Cup trophy presentation. Although India won the final, the team reportedly refused to receive the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi. As a result, the trophy was said to have been sent back to the ACC headquarters in Dubai.

Naqvi maintained that, as the ACC chief, he alone was authorized to present the trophy. Later reports suggested that an alternate ceremony in Dubai was proposed, but India declined that offer as well.

Sources indicate that ICC board members recognize the need for restoring healthy relations between the two cricketing giants, noting that their rivalry carries significant commercial and global importance. Some officials remain hopeful that the upcoming meetings could pave the way for a diplomatic breakthrough.
