News Desk: Now the residents of Rawalpindi will have to pay garbage tax as the authorities have been decided to collect a garbage tax from homes and shops in Rawalpindi from January 1, 2026.

The decision was taken by the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department due to failure to meet property tax targets and a sharp decline in revenue.

The department announced that garbage tax bills will be issued between January 10 and January 20. If the bills are not paid within the agreed period the cases will be registered against defaulters and arrests may also be made.

For that purpose the temporary staff will be hired on daily wages and the Excise Department will be given 10 percent of total recoveries as compensation. The department believes this step will help ensure timely delivery of bills and increased collections.

In urban areas a garbage tax of Rs300 will be charged for single-storey houses, Rs600 for double storey houses, and Rs900 for triple-storey houses and in rural union councils a flat tax of Rs200 will be collected per house and shopkeepers will also have to pay a garbage tax of Rs300.

The garbage tax has been fixed from Rs300 to Rs1,200 and commercial shops and industrial units will be charged between Rs1,000 and Rs5,000.
