The Punjab government has significantly relaxed the fitness certificate requirement for private motor cars, exempting vehicles with different engine capacities from obtaining a fitness certificate for a specified period based on their date of manufacture.
The Punjab Transport Department and Punjab Provincial Transport Authority have introduced new amendments regarding fitness certificates for motor cars by adding the 15th Schedule through a notification issued under the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965.
Under the new amendment, motor cars with engine capacities of up to 1,000cc will be exempt from obtaining a fitness certificate for five years from the date of manufacture, vehicles with engine capacities between 1,001cc and 2,000cc will be exempt for six years, while motor cars above 2,000cc will be exempt for seven years.
After the specified exemption period expires, the relevant motor car will be required to obtain a fitness certificate every year.
According to the Transport Department, the new amendment will apply only to the motor car category, while the purpose of the measure is to reduce unnecessary paperwork and save time for vehicle owners.
