Web Desk: Pakistani academics, researchers and professionals can now apply for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program, which offers selected candidates an opportunity to spend up to 10 months at a US college or university.
The program, funded by the US government and administered in Pakistan by the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP), supports university-level teaching, postdoctoral research or a combination of both.
The exchange is also designed to promote academic and cultural ties. Selected scholars are expected to engage with students, colleagues and community groups in the United States and share their experiences after returning to Pakistan.
The program is open to Pakistani citizens who live and work in Pakistan. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or another terminal degree in their field.
Under the program requirements, applicants whose doctoral degrees were completed within the past two years are not eligible. Candidates must also demonstrate strong written and spoken English skills, although USEFP says the program does not require a separate English-language proficiency test.
Applicants from all academic disciplines may apply except clinical medicine. The program welcomes candidates seeking to undertake research, teaching or both during their US placement.
Applicants must present a clearly defined proposal outlining what they intend to accomplish in the United States and explaining how the proposed work connects with their professional activities in Pakistan.
USEFP identifies the proposal as a central part of the application. Candidates seeking a teaching placement should also demonstrate relevant university-level teaching experience.
Once selected, scholars will work with US academic institutions while developing research and professional links with their American counterparts.
The Fulbright Scholar grant provides financial assistance for the award period. It includes international airfare, a research allowance, a living stipend and health insurance.
USEFP also supports the visa application process and provides funding for one accompanying dependent. Other eligible family members may accompany the scholar, but their expenses are not covered by the grant.
Prospective applicants should review the program’s restrictions before submitting their applications.
Those who have travelled to the United States for research or another long-term educational program within the previous five years are among those excluded. Dual US-Pakistan nationals and certain applicants with close family connections to US citizens or permanent residents are also ineligible.
The program also excludes employees of USEFP or the US Department of State and people who are already studying in the United States or hold a work, residence or student visa in another country.
Applicants must submit a completed online application along with three reference letters and the required supporting documents.
A detailed research or teaching proposal is also required. USEFP says incomplete applications will not be considered and applications must be submitted online rather than on paper.
The deadline for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program is October 28, 2026.
Applicants should review the program instructions, prepare their proposed research or teaching project, arrange reference letters and gather the required supporting material before submitting the application through the USEFP online system.
The official application portal is currently available through USEFP.
Applicants should also ensure that all information in their applications is accurate and that their proposals and essays comply with USEFP’s rules on application integrity, including restrictions concerning plagiarism and misrepresentation.
