WEBDESK: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has reported progress in flood-hit districts, assuring that relief efforts are ongoing.
Director General Irfan Ali Kathia told the media on Saturday that river flows were being monitored closely to prevent emergencies. He said heavy rains had caused breaches in drains in Gujrat, leading to urban flooding. Machinery and funds had been sent to speed up drainage, and conditions were expected to improve within 12 to 18 hours.
He added that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had visited Gujrat to review the situation on the ground.
Kathia said rainfall in northern India had declined, which had eased pressure on Pakistani rivers, especially the Ravi and Sutlej. At Ganda Singh and Head Islam, water levels were receding, while inflows at Jassar were recorded at 71,000 cusecs.
The DG PDMA noted that no new flood alerts had been received in the past 20 hours and that conditions in Multan were improving. “Gujrat and Sialkot remain among the most affected districts, but overall, the situation is gradually stabilising,” he said.
He cautioned that light to moderate rainfall was expected until 9 September but described the system as less damaging than earlier spells. “In the coming days, water levels will continue to decline,” he assured, adding that PDMA teams were committed to timely drainage and relief.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of heavy rain in Islamabad and most parts of Punjab from 7 to 9 September.
In its latest alert, the NDMA said that flash flooding is possible in several areas. The authority added that there is a risk of urban flooding as well as overflow in rivers and streams.
