Karachi: A massive blaze tore through a garments factory in Karachi’s Export Processing Zone on Thursday, prompting authorities to declare it a third-degree fire as more than a dozen firefighting and rescue units battled intense flames and collapsing walls.
Firefighters Rush to Contain Expanding Blaze
Fire brigade officials said the inferno spread rapidly, forcing teams from nearby factories to join the effort. Twelve fire brigade and Rescue 1122 vehicles, including a snorkel, worked to contain the fire as thick smoke engulfed the building and hampered visibility.
Due to the heat and dense smoke, several rescue workers struggled to remain inside the structure. Two firefighters sustained burn injuries while attempting to control the flames.
Walls Collapse and Explosions Heard
The fire caused multiple sections of the factory walls to collapse, producing loud explosion-like sounds, officials said. Authorities evacuated all workers from inside the facility, while heavy machinery broke down exterior walls to create access points for firefighters.
Rescue teams also warned that two adjacent buildings were at risk of catching fire as the blaze intensified.
Security Guard Claims Children Set Fire
In a startling account, the factory’s security guard told investigators that two to three children allegedly sneaked into the building to steal items and set the factory ablaze while fleeing. His claim has not yet been independently verified.
Delayed Response Alleged
The guard further alleged that fire brigade teams arrived roughly 30 minutes after the blaze began. However, officials have not commented on the response time.
Authorities continue efforts to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures as crews work to fully extinguish the blaze. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
