EU backs Pakistan’s right to self-defense against terrorism from Afghanistan

During the 8th round of Pakistan–EU Strategic Dialogue in Islamabad, the European Union reaffirmed that Pakistan has the right to defend itself against terrorism originating from Afghanistan.


EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said that Pakistan is a key regional power and an important partner of the EU. She also appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic role in easing tensions, including mediation efforts in the Iran–US situation.


She added that under the GSP+ framework, the EU expects further progress from Pakistan in human rights and labor rights, while cooperation is expanding in areas such as climate change, digital infrastructure, clean energy, migration, and mobility.


Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in trade and investment. He noted that both sides discussed security and counter-terrorism concerns, highlighting ongoing threats from militant groups operating from Afghan territory.


According to the Foreign Office, broader regional and global developments were also discussed ahead of the strategic dialogue session.

Furthermore, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas appreciated Pakistan’s key role in extending its cooperation for regional peace and stability. She reiterated that Pakistan is a key mediator in the conflict between US and Iran. She expressed satisfaction over the role being played by Pakistani leadership in this regard.
