Big news for foreigners wishing to travel to Spain

Web Desk: The Spanish government approved a landmark proposal on Tuesday to grant legal residency status to approximately 500,000 undocumented migrants currently living in the country.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez defended the decision as a national necessity, stating that the measure acknowledges the reality of hundreds of thousands of individuals who already contribute to Spanish society. By granting them legal status, the government aims to formally integrate these individuals into the national workforce.

According to the plan, eligible migrants will receive a renewable one-year residency permit. To qualify, applicants must prove they have lived in Spain for at least five months and maintain a clean criminal record. The government confirmed that the application window will open on April 16 and run through the end of June.

Prime Minister Sanchez emphasized that migrants have played a vital role in building a prosperous Spain. He further argued that foreign labor remains indispensable for sustaining the country’s economy and public services. While the government focuses on half a million people, the research institute Funcas estimates that around 840,000 undocumented migrants currently reside in Spain, the majority of whom are from Latin America.

However, the move face stiff resistance from the opposition People’s Party. Critics argue that the policy will encourage further illegal migration and claimed the government’s figures are understated. Opposition leaders suggested that up to one million people could eventually apply under the scheme and indicated they would attempt to block the legislation.

In contrast, the Catholic Church expressed support for the government’s humanitarian approach. Spain has a history of implementing similar amnesty programs, with the last major legalization occurring in 2005 when a previous socialist administration granted residency to 577,000 people.

Consequently, the approval of this plan sets the stage for a significant legal and political debate regarding immigration reform as the April 16 start date approaches. Authorities expect the influx of new legal workers to bolster social security contributions and address labor shortages in key sectors such as agriculture and hospitality.
