Apna ghar scheme: How to apply and who qualifies for the Govt housing initiative

⏱ 3 minute read
Apna Ghar Scheme

Web Desk: Pakistan has launched “Apna Ghar Scheme” a nationwide housing initiative aimed at expanding homeownership among low- and middle-income families, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formally rolled out the Apna Ghar Scheme and oversaw the distribution of loan cheques to selected applicants.

The program offers subsidised loans of up to 10 million rupees on eased terms, with authorities targeting tens of thousands of households in its initial phase. Officials say the scheme will be implemented across all four provinces, as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir.

How to Apply

Applicants can register through the scheme’s official online portal or at designated housing authority centers. The process requires individuals to submit personal and financial details, along with supporting documents such as a national identity card, proof of income and family information.

Once submitted, applicants receive a tracking number to monitor their application. Authorities say a nominal processing fee may apply in some cases.

Eligibility Criteria

The government has set eligibility criteria to prioritize those most in need. Applicants must be Pakistani citizens holding a valid national identity card and should not own a house or property.

In addition, candidates must fall within defined low- or middle-income brackets. While age limits may apply, applicants seeking financing must also demonstrate a stable financial background. Special quotas are expected for vulnerable groups, including widows, persons with disabilities and certain public-sector employees.

What Happens Next?

After registration, officials review applications and shortlist candidates, who may then be selected through a balloting process. Successful applicants are offered housing units or long-term financing options on manageable installments.

Sharif said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to making housing accessible, describing the provision of shelter as a fundamental responsibility of the state.

The prime minister said loans under the scheme will be extended for up to 20 years. The government aims to finance at least 50,000 housing units in the first phase, backed by an allocation of 321 billion rupees.

Over the next four years, authorities plan to expand the program to cover up to 500,000 homes, with the total size of the scheme estimated at 3.2 trillion rupees. The financing will support construction on plots of up to 10 marlas.

Sharif added that he would personally review the scheme’s implementation on a monthly basis to ensure timely disbursement of loans.

Officials say the initiative is expected to stimulate the construction sector, which plays a key role in driving economic activity. The government has also pledged to recognize participating banks and encourage private-sector collaboration to support the program’s rollout.

Authorities advise applicants to verify information through official channels as the scheme progresses, amid growing public interest in affordable housing opportunities.
