NEW DELHI: Revealing a deep credibility crisis, Al Jazeera has exposed the falsehoods, and organized propaganda spread by Indian media outlets. According to the reknowned global news organization, trust in Indian media is eroding as ownership is concentrated in the hands of political and corporate allies.
Journalist Meenakshi Ravi criticized Indian media for being used as a propaganda tool against neighboring countries, promoting sensationalism across borders and advancing Hindutva politics. Another journalist Smita Sharma observed that Indian television is suffering from a severe trust deficit, lacking fundamental journalism and turning into a web of noise rather than information. “Indian news channels have aired baseless reports claiming control over Lahore and Karachi,” she recalled.
Himal Southasian editor Ruman Gautam is of the view that Indian media prioritizes political and ideological interests over informing the public about real issues. Al Jazeera also reported that critical journalists in India face lawsuits, police harassment, and job loss, while the country’s ranking on the Global Press Freedom Index continues to decline.
