Lahore weather update: heavy rain predicted today

WEBDESK: Meteorological Department said that today on Tuesday heavy rain fell in many cities of Punjab, specially in Lahore which caused problems of urban flooding.

Low lying areas of Narowal, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala and Lahore were most affected. Officials said that the rain also caused flash floods in small streams and nullahs. People faced trouble as strong winds and lightning damaged weak structures like electric poles, billboards and rooftops of kacha houses.

The MET Office said the eighth spell of this year’s monsoon is continuing with intensity across Punjab, and more showers are expected over the next 24 hours. Strong monsoon currents are entering from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, while a westerly wave is also affecting the upper parts of the country.

On Monday, Lahore received moderate to heavy rain that brought relief from the heat but also disrupted power supply. Several neighbourhoods suffered both long and short-hour outages as the transmission system was affected.

The rain made the weather pleasant, with humidity dropping after the showers. Wind speed in Lahore was recorded at 13 kilometres per hour, while humidity touched 95 percent.

Rainfall during the past 24 hours was recorded at 27 mm in Narowal, 5 mm in Sialkot, 4 mm in Kasur, and 3 mm each in Lahore and Gujranwala. Gujrat and Khanewal received 1 mm. Other cities including Murree, Larkana, Rohri, Dir, Malam Jabba, Balakot, Rawalakot, Garhi Dupatta, Bagrote, Gilgit and Skardu also saw rainfall.

The highest temperature on Monday was 41°C in Dalbandin and Nokundi, while Lahore remained cool at 26°C.
