Panic buttons installed in Lahore women’s colleges, universities

WEBDESK: The Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) has begun installing panic buttons in women’s colleges and universities across Lahore. The initiative follows special instructions from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and aims to strengthen security for female students in educational institutions.

According to a PSCA spokesperson, 39 women’s colleges and universities in Lahore have already been equipped with the system during the first phase of the project. The programme will now gradually extend to more than 450 women’s colleges across the province.

The panic buttons are directly linked to the PSCA’s central control room. When pressed, an immediate alert is sent to the Virtual Women Police Station. This triggers a rapid police response, ensuring that help can reach students quickly. The system has been designed to provide a safe and reliable option for those unable to use their mobile phones in emergencies.

The spokesperson also highlighted that panic button technology is not new to Punjab. At present, it is already operational at 122 locations in Lahore and 101 locations in other cities. However, introducing the system in women’s colleges represents a significant expansion of Punjab’s public safety network.

The PSCA described the move as part of a broader technology-driven effort to make academic environments more secure and to ensure that female students feel safer on campus.
