Schools closed in these districts for one week amid heavy rains, flash floods

WEBDESK: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced the closure of schools in the province’s upper districts for one week due to heavy rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods.

According to the official notification, schools will remain closed from 19 August to 25 August 2025.

KP Education Minister Faisal Khan Tarakai confirmed the decision on X, saying that “educational institutions in cold mountainous areas will stay closed, but learning will continue at home or online.”

Authorities noted that schools in Swat, including Malakand Division, will also stay closed during this period.

The decision comes after devastating floods and cloudbursts caused widespread damage in parts of the province. Roads, homes, and standing crops have been badly affected.

In Swabi district, a cloudburst in Dalori village killed at least 13 people, while four more deaths were reported in Sarkoi, bringing the total death toll to 17. Women and children are among the victims.

Rescue efforts are underway. The Deputy Commissioner of Swabi said seven excavators, six ambulances, and two rescue vehicles, along with Rescue 1122 staff, are taking part in the operation. Dozens of people trapped under debris have been recovered, while others remain missing.

Officials warned that the death toll may rise as search and rescue teams continue their work in difficult conditions.

The KP education department stated that the situation will be reviewed before schools reopen, depending on weather and recovery progress.
