Schools closed again amid heavy rainfall, flash floods

WEBDESK: Authorities in Bagh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, have ordered the temporary closure of all schools and educational institutions due to a high flood alert.

Official notification was made stating that all government and private schools will be closed on August 18 and 19, 2025. The objective is to ensure that students and staff are safe against possible flooding and landslides.

The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain and thunderstorm in some of the districts including Muzaffarbad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Haveli, Kotli, Mirpur, Bhimber. Flash floods and landslides are a major threat to the hilly regions.

In Islamabad, heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are expected over the next 24 hours, with brief gaps in between.

Punjab will also experience widespread rainfall. Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Narowal, Hafizabad and Mandi Bahauddin Northern and northeastern districts might experience heavy rainfall and urban flooding. Scattered thunderstorms are predicted in central and southern districts, including Multan, D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Sahiwal, whereas amid scattered rainfalls, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Rahim Yar Khan could experience light precinches.

The districts in the north and upper including the Swat, Buner, Shangla, Dir, Mansehra, Battagram, Abbottabad and Malakand are likely to experience prolonged rain spells, flash floods, and landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The northern region will experience thunderstorms in the Peshawar valley which includes Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan and Swabi, and in some districts in the south (D.I. Khan, Tank, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Karak and Kohat) scattered heavy rain is also predicted.

Officials stressed that school closures are necessary to reduce risks as the monsoon continues. Residents are advised to remain alert and take precautions.
