A 6.1-magnitude Balikesir earthquake struck Türkiye’s northwestern province on Sunday, killing one person and injuring at least 29, officials said.

The quake, centred near Sindirgi, brought down more than a dozen structures as emergency teams moved in to search the debris.

Tremors from earthquake were felt as far as Istanbul, around 200 kilometres to the north.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said 16 buildings collapsed in the region, most of them derelict and unused.

In Sindirgi, an elderly woman died shortly after being pulled alive from the rubble, while four others were rescued from the same site.

Two mosque minarets also fell. The minister added that none of the injured were in critical condition.

Television footage showed rescue workers calling for silence to listen for signs of life beneath the wreckage.

Provincial authorities cordoned off damaged streets and urged residents to avoid unstable buildings while engineers assess structural risks.

Health and disaster teams set up treatment points and temporary shelters for those displaced.
