PM pays tribute on Dr Ruth Pfau death anniversary

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday paid tribute to Dr Ruth Pfau on her death anniversary, praising her lifelong service to the poor and vulnerable in Pakistan.

In an official message from Islamabad on August 10, he said her compassion and sacrifice would always be remembered.

The prime minister said Dr Pfau’s work for leprosy patients is a proud chapter in Pakistan’s history.

He noted that her mission gave thousands of patients dignity and a respected place in society.

Dr Ruth Pfau was a German born physician who chose Pakistan as her home and dedicated decades to control the leprosy.

Furthermore, she establish and expand services that reached remote areas and stood with patients at a time when stigma was high.

Her work set a standard for public health care that went beyond treatment to human dignity.

She passed away on August 10, 2017.

Many Pakistanis still refer to her as a symbol of compassion.

Health workers and volunteers who learned under her guidance continue leprosy control and disability care across the country.

In his message, the prime minister said Dr Pfau’s example calls for unity, kindness and steady service to people.

He added that overseas Pakistanis and the public sector should carry her mission forward by supporting inclusive health services.
