Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc reached a new milestone during the first Test against Bangladesh after dismissing Shadman Islam, becoming the most successful left-arm bowler in Test cricket history.
During the first Test of the series being played in Darwin, Starc dismissed Shadman Islam in the ninth over of the innings, with Nathan Lyon taking the catch. With this wicket, Starc surpassed the record of former Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath, who had taken 433 Test wickets.
Starc’s Test wicket tally has now reached 434, achieved in 106 Test matches. He has also moved into a joint 11th place with India’s legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev on the list of the highest wicket-takers in Test cricket.
The 36-year-old Starc needs just six more wickets to enter the top 10 Test wicket-takers. South African great Dale Steyn currently occupies 10th place with 439 wickets.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram is third among the most successful left-arm bowlers, with 414 Test wickets.
Starc made his international debut for Australia in October 2010 and soon became a key fast bowler for the team across all three formats. He is among the few cricketers to have won all three major ICC men’s world titles—the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and World Test Championship.
Starc has also made his mark in ODI cricket, where he has taken 247 wickets in 130 matches at an average of 23.58. He was also part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in 2015 and 2023.
This remarkable achievement adds another memorable chapter to Mitchell Starc’s long and outstanding Test career, giving him a unique place in the history of left-arm bowling.
