Australia were bowled out for 198 runs after a brilliant six-wicket haul by Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud in the first Test of the series in Darwin.
Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. After an opening partnership of 45 runs, Australia lost four wickets in quick succession at a total of 74.
Jake Weatherald was dismissed for 23, Travis Head for 22, Cameron Green for 13 and Marnus Labuschagne for one.
Steve Smith and Alex Carey then put together a 55-run partnership to steady the Australian innings, but Carey was dismissed for 19 with the team’s total at 129.
Smith continued to hold one end together, but wickets kept falling at the other as Australia were eventually bowled out for 198.
Smith was Australia’s top scorer with 71 runs, while Beau Webster made 12, captain Pat Cummins 9, Nathan Lyon 7 and Mitchell Starc one.
For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud claimed six wickets, while Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain took two wickets each.
This was only the second time that Bangladesh’s fast bowlers had taken all 10 wickets in an innings.
Hasan Mahmud’s figures of 6 for 55 are the third-best figures by a Bangladeshi fast bowler in Test cricket.
The strong bowling strike gave Bangladesh an ideal start in the Darwin Test, with Hasan Mahmud emerging as the key performer. Australia will now look tocome back with the ball and restrict Bangladesh’s lead as the match progresses.
