Artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic has announced that its AI chatbot Claude will now add hidden watermarks to text and images it generates, making it possible to identify content created using AI.
The move comes in the context of the European Union’s AI-related requirements concerning the identification and transparency of AI-generated content.
According to the company, the technology will be implemented worldwide and will also apply to certain uses of Claude, including Claude Code.
The hidden watermark will generally not be visible to humans. However, automated systems will be able to determine whether content was generated by artificial intelligence using specific markers or signals.
Watermarking is already relatively common in AI-generated images. However, experts say the technology has certain limitations. For example, in some cases, editing an image, changing its format, or taking a screenshot can affect or remove the watermark.
Anthropic’s decision comes at a time when concerns are growing over the rapid increase in low-quality AI-generated content on the internet. Such mass-produced content is commonly referred to as “AI slop.”
Anthropic said the move isaimed to improve transparency while making it easier tolocate the origin of content as the use of generative AI continues to expand.
