Web Desk: Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah ruled out any immediate plans to create new provinces, saying the issue was not on the government’s agenda and that the country’s existing constitutional and parliamentary framework had proven its resilience over decades.
Speaking during a television interview, the senior leader of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also described the ongoing elections in Pakistan-administered Azad Jammu and Kashmir as free and fair, expressing confidence that his party would secure enough seats to form the next regional government independently.
Sanaullah said the PML-N’s development record in Punjab had contributed to its electoral performance in Azad Kashmir, adding that the party expected to strengthen its position in the remaining phases of the elections.
He accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of relying on negative campaigning during the second phase of voting and predicted that the opposition party would eventually accept the final election results.
“We expect to win seven out of the remaining 10 seats,” he said, adding that the PML-N would not require coalition partners to establish the next government in the region.
He also said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was aware that the elections had been conducted transparently.
Addressing speculation about the creation of new provinces, Sanaullah said the ruling party had not held any formal discussions or adopted a policy on the issue.
“There has been no meeting of the PML-N in which a clear position on new provinces was adopted. The matter is not on the agenda at this stage,” he said.
He argued that Pakistan’s parliamentary democratic system, established under the 1973 Constitution, remained capable of addressing the country’s governance challenges.
Sanaullah said the country’s constitutional framework had preserved national unity despite periods of political instability, including military rule.
“The system itself is not flawed; our failure has been in not implementing the Constitution in its true spirit,” he said.
He added that the constitutional order had successfully served Pakistan for more than five decades and would continue to do so if implemented faithfully.
“If we uphold the Constitution with sincerity, it will deliver. But if we continue to violate it and prevent the system from functioning properly, it cannot produce the desired results,” he said.
