Web Desk: Pakistan has unveiled a bio-inspired surveillance drone designed to mimic the appearance and flight of a bird, marking one of the standout exhibits at the Indus RAS Expo as the country showcases advances in indigenous defense technology.
Known as the Bird-Inspired Aerial Vehicle (BIAV), the unmanned system is engineered to fly in a manner similar to a real bird, allowing it to blend into natural surroundings while carrying out intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions with a reduced likelihood of detection.
Officials and exhibitors said the drone’s biomimetic design enables it to operate discreetly in environments where conventional unmanned aerial vehicles may be more easily identified, making it suitable for covert reconnaissance and observation tasks.
The unveiling comes as Pakistan continues to invest in locally developed unmanned systems and emerging technologies aimed at strengthening situational awareness and intelligence-gathering capabilities.
The Indus RAS Expo is Pakistan’s premier exhibition dedicated to robotics, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and security technologies. Organized to bring together defense manufacturers, technology firms, research institutions and government stakeholders, the event serves as a platform to showcase indigenous innovations alongside international developments in unmanned and autonomous systems.
The exhibition features a wide range of technologies, including unmanned aerial, ground and maritime platforms, artificial intelligence applications, cybersecurity solutions, smart surveillance systems and next-generation defense equipment. It also promotes collaboration between industry, academia and the armed forces while highlighting Pakistan’s efforts to expand its domestic defense manufacturing and technological capabilities.
The introduction of the BIAV reflects a broader global trend toward bio-inspired aerial systems that imitate birds and other wildlife to improve stealth, maneuverability and operational effectiveness during surveillance missions.
