The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has rejected biased and baseless social media claims alleging that its systems were breached and that citizens’ data, including CNIC numbers, photographs, and biometric information, is being sold on the dark web.
In its official statement, NADRA said the claim circulating on social media platforms is unsubstantiated, noting that the social media post itself acknowledges there is no evidence to support the allegation.
The authority also stated that claims of the same nature had also surfaced in 2024. On both occasions, it conducted comprehensive technical investigations in coordination with the National Computer Emergency Response Team (NCERT) and the National Telecommunications and Information Security Board (NTISB). The investigations reached no evidence of any breach of NADRA’s systems or any unauthorized access to citizens’ data.
NADRA further argued that the sample images being shared online do not match the format in which it captures and stores citizens’ information. It added that the same images have appeared on multiple online platforms in the past and are not linked to any breach of its database.
NADRA further clarified that there is no cybersecurity incident requiring remediation. However, it emphasized that it continues to monitor such claims closely in coordination with the relevant national cybersecurity agencies to ensure the security and integrity of citizens’ data.
In its statement the authority urged citizens to pay no heed to such baseless claims as they are often circulated with a malicious intent behind.
