Avoid using illegal or tampered IMEI mobile phones, warns PTA
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a public advisory warning consumers against the use of illegal and unregistered mobile phones, stating that devices with unverified IMEI numbers are liable to be blocked.
The PTA urged the public to purchase only approved and PTA-registered mobile phones and to avoid buying duplicate or cloned devices. It also advised consumers to verify that the IMEI number printed on the phone matches the one on the device’s box before making a purchase.
According to the advisory, users can verify a handset’s status through the Device Verification System (DVS). The authority also cautioned against using mobile phones with illegal or tampered IMEI numbers.
The PTA warned that tampering with an IMEI number is a punishable offence under Pakistani law. Those found guilty could face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to Rs1 million, or both.
The PTA authorities said the advisory is aimed at raising public awareness and encouraging consumers to purchase mobile phones through legitimate channels. It urged users to remain cautious and follow official guidelines to avoid inconvenience and legal complications.
