Web Desk: The police chief of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has urged the public to verify information before sharing it online, warning that misinformation and fake news pose a growing challenge to society.

Speaking at a press conference, Inspector General of Police Liaqat Ali Malik said individuals and groups were spreading misleading narratives about the situation in Azad Kashmir. He added that some actors were using modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, to create and circulate false information.

“Fake and fabricated news has become one of the biggest challenges of the modern era,” Malik said. “People should verify any information before sharing it on social media.”

The police chief also rejected reports claiming that roads across Azad Kashmir had been closed. He said all major routes into and within the region remained open and that residents and visitors could travel normally.

Malik criticized a recent report by the British broadcaster BBC, describing it as misleading. He said international media organizations should ensure they verify facts before publishing reports related to sensitive situations.

According to Malik, authorities have not blocked transport operators from using the road network. He acknowledged that some routes near Rawalakot faced disruptions but said most roads across the region remained accessible.

He further alleged that members of a banned organization had attempted to create disturbances by blocking roads and targeting vehicles. However, he said law enforcement agencies were actively monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, Malik warned that misinformation and rumors could undermine public confidence and affect law and order. Therefore, he encouraged citizens to rely on official and verified sources for updates.

He also called on the public to avoid sharing unverified content and to confirm suspicious information through relevant authorities before forwarding it online.

The police chief reaffirmed the commitment of law enforcement agencies to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the region.

“We will continue to work with the public to counter negative propaganda and prevent the spread of false information,” Malik said.

His remarks come amid heightened public debate over reports concerning transport access and security conditions in Azad Kashmir.
