Authorities across Pakistan have placed security on high alert as mourning processions marking the 9th of Muharram are set to take place today in remembrance of the martyrs of Karbala.
Additional personnel from police, Rangers and other law-enforcement agencies have been deployed along procession routes in major cities, while surveillance of entry and exit points has been intensified. Walk-through gates, CCTV cameras and other modern monitoring systems are being used at sensitive locations.
Traffic diversion plans have been enforced in several cities, and mobile phone services will remain partially suspended in certain areas as part of security measures.
Lahore
Lahore’s central 9th Muharram procession will begin from Pando Street in Islampura. The procession will pass through Siraj Building, Islampura Chowk, Neeli Bagh Chowk and other designated routes before heading towards Old Anarkali.
After reaching Imambargah Khaima-e-Sadat via Old Anarkali, the AG Office and Baba Mauj Darya Road, mourners will attend a majlis and offer Maghrib prayers. The procession will then return along its designated route and conclude at Pando Street.
Islamabad
In Islamabad, the main 9th Muharram procession will emerge from Imambargah G-6 Asna Ashari. Authorities have completely sealed roads along the procession route to ensure security.
Karachi
Karachi’s central procession will start at 1:00 pm from Nishtar Park. Before the procession, a central majlis will be held at 10:00 am, where Allama Shehanshah Hussain Naqvi will address mourners.
Led by the Pak Haidri Scouts, the procession will pass through its traditional route, including Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road, MA Jinnah Road and Numaish Chowrangi.
Participants will offer Zuhrain prayers outside Imambargah Ali Raza on MA Jinnah Road before the procession concludes at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.
Multan
The central mourning procession in Multan will begin from Imambargah Mumtazabad. Authorities are monitoring routes through CCTV surveillance.
Peshawar
Several central processions will be held in Peshawar from different imambargahs. Security and administrative arrangements have been finalized.
The first central procession will emerge from Bibi Sahiba Imambargah at 4:00 pm, followed by processions from Qamar Bani Hashim Imambargah near City Railway Station and Sain Zareen Imamia Colony Gulbahar later in the afternoon.
Additional processions from various imambargahs across the city will continue throughout the evening and night under strict security arrangements.
Quetta
In Quetta, the Shabih Zuljanah procession will emerge from Imambargah Nasir-ul-Aza. Mobile phone services have been suspended across the city.
According to the administration, stringent security measures have been implemented. Streets and lanes connected to procession routes have been sealed with containers, while markets and shops located along the routes have been closed.
Authorities have urged citizens to follow traffic advisories and avoid unnecessary travel during procession timings.
