Portugal vs DR Congo World Cup 2026

Web Desk: Portugal squandered an early lead and settled for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in a tightly contested FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K match on Wednesday, as Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates failed to find a winning breakthrough.

Portugal made a dream start when Joao Neves headed home in the sixth minute, giving the European side an early advantage and control of proceedings.

Thereafter, Portugal dominated possession and pushed DR Congo deep into their own half. Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes frequently threatened the Congolese defense while Portugal searched for a second goal before halftime.

However, DR Congo remained disciplined at the back and gradually grew into the contest. Their resilience paid off in first-half stoppage time when Yann Wissa capitalized on a scoring opportunity to level the match at 1-1.

The equalizer shifted momentum heading into the break and handed the African side renewed confidence for the second half.

After the restart, both teams created chances but struggled to convert them. Portugal thought they had regained the lead when Joao Cancelo found the net, but officials ruled the goal offside following a review.

Meanwhile, DR Congo continued to frustrate their opponents with an organized defensive display and quick counterattacks.

As the match entered its closing stages, Portugal increased the pressure in search of a winner. Nevertheless, DR Congo’s backline held firm and denied several late attacks, preserving the draw.

Despite Portugal’s attacking talent and superior possession, Ronaldo’s side could not break through again, while DR Congo celebrated a valuable point against one of the tournament favorites.

The result leaves Group K finely balanced as both teams continue their campaigns in the race for a place in the knockout stage.
