Web Desk: Qatar has publicly endorsed Pakistan’s leadership in mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, highlighting Islamabad’s growing diplomatic role in a peace process that has brought the two longtime adversaries closer to a potential agreement.
During a weekly media briefing, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson and adviser to the prime minister, Majed Al Ansari, said Doha was supporting a mediation framework led by Pakistan and working closely with Pakistani officials to facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
“Regarding the role of Qatar in this mediation, we are supporting the Pakistani-led mediation, working within the mediation team in support of the efforts of our brothers in Pakistan,” Al Ansari said.
He commended Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement, saying Islamabad had played a decisive role in advancing negotiations and would continue to serve as the principal intermediary between the United States and Iran.
“We must praise the role Pakistan has played to get us to this point, and the role that they will play forward as the main mediator between the US and Iran,” he added.
Diplomatic Efforts Move Forward
Qatar’s remarks come as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran gather momentum following months of intensive negotiations aimed at reducing regional tensions and creating conditions for broader discussions on security and nuclear issues.
Officials familiar with the talks say the two sides have made significant progress on a framework designed to reduce hostilities, strengthen regional stability and pave the way for future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. The process has involved sustained engagement by regional partners, with Pakistan emerging as a key facilitator.
Pakistan at the Centre of Negotiations
Pakistan has assumed an increasingly prominent role throughout the diplomatic process, hosting contacts and helping maintain communication channels between the two sides during critical stages of the negotiations.
Pakistani officials have repeatedly expressed confidence in the progress achieved through dialogue, describing Islamabad as an important bridge between Washington and Tehran. Diplomats say Pakistan helped narrow differences on several contentious issues and kept discussions alive during periods of heightened tension.
Qatar has complemented those efforts by supporting the broader mediation initiative and coordinating closely with Pakistani officials as talks moved toward a more advanced stage.
Focus Shifts to Long-Term Stability
Despite the progress made, negotiators still face complex challenges, including questions surrounding sanctions, regional security arrangements and the future direction of Iran’s nuclear activities.
Officials involved in the process have stressed that any future agreement will require sustained political commitment, confidence-building measures and effective implementation mechanisms.
Nevertheless, the diplomatic breakthrough has generated cautious optimism across the region, with many governments viewing the talks as a rare opportunity to ease tensions and strengthen regional security.
Al Ansari said Qatar viewed its participation in the mediation effort as part of its broader commitment to preserving stability in the region.
“For us in Qatar, we don’t take lightly our responsibility towards regional security,” he said.
As negotiations continue, Pakistan’s role as the lead mediator and Qatar’s public backing underscore the growing importance of regional diplomacy in addressing one of the Middle East’s most sensitive geopolitical challenges.
