The Punjab government has decided to end the free travel facility being provided on Metro Bus, Orange Line Train, Speedo, Electric, and Green Bus services.
According to the Punjab Mass Transit Authority, although there was no significant reduction in petroleum product prices, the government has withdrawn the subsidy. However, from 13 June, passengers traveling on the mass transit system will have to pay regular fares. The free travel facility will remain available across Punjab’s mass transit system until tonight.
Officials said the free travel facility was introduced in April 2026 under a public relief package. Initially, it was announced for one month, but its extension was also considered and relevant recommendations were prepared.
According to figures, around 800,000 passengers daily benefited from the free travel facility on Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo, and Green Bus services. On the Orange Line Train alone, about 290,000 passengers were traveling for free daily, while more than 100,000 citizens used the Metro Bus service.
The government introduced this facility to reduce the impact of inflation and rising petroleum prices. However, after its withdrawal, passengers will once again have to pay the prescribed fares.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, while unveiling the relief package, said that financial assistance would also be provided to protect agriculture, food, and farmers.
