US, Iran close to agreement, Field Marshal Asim Munir played key role: New York Times

The The New York Times has reported that the United States and Iran have moved close to an agreement, in which Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir played a key role.

According to the report, the Field Marshal’s recent visit to Iran represented high-level diplomacy. Despite progress, however, fundamental differences still remain, and no breakthrough has yet been achieved regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has returned home after completing a brief but highly productive official visit to Iran. During the visit, he held meetings with senior Iranian leaders as part of mediation efforts aimed at permanently ending the Iran–U.S. conflict.

According to ISPR, the purpose of the visit was to reduce regional tensions that emerged after the April 8 ceasefire and to promote constructive engagement. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.

The meetings focused on accelerating consultations to achieve peace, stability, and a final agreement. The discussions were described as positive and constructive. Pakistan reportedly played a meaningful role in the mediation process, and the extended talks held over 24 hours resulted in encouraging progress toward a final understanding. Iranian leaders appreciated Pakistan’s efforts in facilitating negotiations and supporting a peaceful resolution of disputes.

Speaking to journalists, Marco Rubio said that there could be an announcement “today, tomorrow, or in the next few days. The U.S. Secretary of State also said he is hopeful for positive news regarding the Iran conflict

Marco Robio said he remained in continuous contact with Pakistan’s top leadership, including Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, and that the US was working together with Pakistan on Iran-related diplomatic efforts.

He reiterated that Pakistan has played an important and fundamental role in the negotiations between Iran and the United States. Pakistan has provided significant assistance in this process, and high-level contacts are ongoing.
