CBS reporter in Nur Khan aircraft story fired multiple times over false reporting

⏱ 3 minute read
False reporting of Jim Laporta about Nur Khan base

The Journalist Jim Laporta who filed the poorly sourced, professionally weak CBS story on Iran Aircrafts parked at Nurkhan was fired multiple times due to false reporting, putting at stake the credibility and authenticity of his news.

Recently on May 11 CBS reporter Jim LaPorta reported on May 11 that Pakistan permitted Iranian military aircraft, including an Iranian Air Force RC-130 reconnaissance variant of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules, to park at Nur Khan Air Base near Rawalpindi in the days after Trump’s April 7 ceasefire announcement. This claim has also been taken as fabricated and sensational widely by journalists’ forums.

Pakistani authorities immediately rejected the report, calling it “misleading and absurd.” Officials stated that Nur Khan Air Base is located in a densely populated urban area where such large-scale military movement could not be concealed. Due to the diplomatic tension caused by this false report and LaPorta’s controversial record, the organization decided to terminate him.

A senior Pakistani official told CBS the base “is right in the heart of the city. It can’t be hidden.” Pakistani journalists framed the report Monday as “misleading” and “routine diplomatic logistics” for the hosted indirect talks.

James LaPorta’s Journalistic History and AP Dismissal

This is not the first time James LaPorta has faced dismissal over inaccurate reporting. His past includes serious mistakes that were considered potentially dangerous for global peace:

In November 2022, while working with the Associated Press (AP), LaPorta reported that Russian missiles had struck Poland, killing two people. The report sparked global fears of a possible World War III scenario, as Poland is a NATO member.

Later investigations revealed that the missile was actually part of Ukraine’s air defense system and had accidentally landed in Poland. AP described the error as “extremely serious” and dismissed him in November 2022.

AP News had raised concerns that LaPorta repeatedly relied on “unnamed U.S. intelligence sources” to publish sensational and inaccurate reports, violating journalistic ethics.

On Anonymous Sources and National Security Journalism

The case of James LaPorta is seen as a cautionary example for modern journalism. When a journalist repeatedly fabricates or misuses anonymous sources, it damages not only their credibility but also the reputation of their entire organization.

Pakistan is currently playing a professional mediating role between the United States and Iran. In such a sensitive situation, false claims about Iranian aircraft in Pakistan are seen by critics as an attempt to undermine Pakistan’s neutrality.

In the age of social media, such reports spread globally within minutes. Critics argue that journalists like LaPorta have prioritized being first over being accurate, neglecting the core principle of verifying information before publication.
