Team will play its first match in Los Angeles on June 15
TEHRAN: Iran has confirmed its participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026, saying the national team will definitely take part in the tournament.
However, the host countries — Mexico, the United States, and Canada — will have to address Iran’s concerns.
According to a foreign news agency, the Iranian Football Federation said that tensions in the Middle East and recent political disputes had raised concerns regarding Iran’s participation. However, a final decision has now been made that the Iranian team will compete in the World Cup.
Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj said that Iran has placed 10 conditions before the host nations. These include issuing visas to players and officials without obstacles, respecting the national flag and anthem, and providing full security to the team.
He added that Iran has especially sought assurances that there will be no visa problems for players who previously had links with the Revolutionary Guards, including Mehdi Taremi.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has already made it clear that Iran’s matches in the United States will proceed as scheduled. Iran has been placed in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt, while the team will play its opening match on June 15 in Los Angeles.
