Qatari LNG tanker Al Kharaitiyat navigates Strait of Hormuz for Pakistan

Web Desk: A Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker is currently navigating the Strait of Hormuz toward Pakistan, marking the first major attempt to transport fuel through the strategic waterway since conflict erupted in late February.

Shipping data identifies the vessel as the Al Kharaitiyat. It has advanced further than previous tankers, which were forced to retreat due to maritime restrictions and security threats. The ship is currently utilizing a northern shipping corridor near Iran’s Qeshm and Larak islands with the approval of Tehran.

The vessel is traveling at full speed and shows no signs of altering its course. Analysts suggest a successful passage could signal a broader reopening of energy exports from the Gulf, which have been largely paralyzed by regional instability.

This shipment represents a critical development for Pakistan’s energy sector. The country relies on Qatar for more than 90 percent of its liquefied natural gas needs and has faced severe shortages since deliveries stalled in early March. The disruption followed a surge in regional tensions and military actions involving U.S. and Iranian forces.

While a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan is currently in effect, the situation remains precarious. Minor skirmishes have occurred between the U.S. Navy and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps over the past week. Additionally, diplomatic pressure from regional actors continues to mount, with some urging the U.S. to resume strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure.

If the Al Kharaitiyat reaches its destination safely, the transit will serve as a vital test of whether energy trade can persist through the world’s most sensitive chokepoint despite the fragile truce.
