The Meteorological Department has issued a high alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the risk of glacier bursts, heavy rainfall, and potential flooding.
According to the advisory, a moderate western weather system is expected to enter Pakistan’s upper regions from May 3, 2026, bringing strong winds, thunderstorms, and heavy rain across both areas.
Experts warn that after a sudden rise in temperatures, such weather conditions can significantly increase the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF), landslides, and flash floods.
The report highlights that areas including Hopper, Gulkin, Shisper, Yasin, Phander, Bud Swat, Lower Hunza, Nagar, Ghanche, and Upper Dir are particularly vulnerable.
Authorities have advised residents in glacial valleys to stay away from streams, rivers, and water channels during rainfall. People are urged to move to safer locations immediately if they notice unusual signs such as changes in water colour or the sound of rocks colliding in flowing water.
Citizens have also been instructed to shift livestock and essential belongings to higher ground and remain in constant contact with local disaster management committees.
Disaster management authorities are currently on high alert around the clock, maintaining communication with technical teams in remote areas to minimize potential loss of life and property in case of any emergency.
