Web Desk: New Zealand has officially launched a revamped “Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa,” offering a streamlined pathway for international professionals seeking permanent residency.
The Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment confirmed that the initiative aims to attract global talent by providing a combined package of permanent residency, employment opportunities, and access to education.
Under this scheme, successful applicants can reside in the country indefinitely. Furthermore, the visa allows residents to include their spouses and dependent children up to the age of 24 in their applications.
According to official guidelines, the initial application fee is set at NZ$6,450. After maintaining residency for two years, visa holders become eligible for a Permanent Resident Visa, which permits unrestricted travel into and out of the country.
To qualify for the program, applicants must be 55 years of age or younger. In addition to age limits, candidates must meet strict health and character requirements while demonstrating high proficiency in the English language.
Moreover, every applicant must secure a full-time job offer from an accredited employer and accumulate at least six skilled points based on their professional background.
Regarding employment conditions, the job must require at least 30 hours of work per week. This role must be permanent or based on a contract lasting at least 12 months. Meanwhile, the government has set specific wage thresholds to ensure fair compensation.
Workers in ANZSCO Levels 1 to 3 must earn a minimum of NZ$35 per hour, whereas those in Levels 4 to 5 must earn at least NZ$52.50 per hour.
The selection process relies on a points-based system where candidates earn credit for professional registration, educational qualifications, and high income. Additionally, applicants can gain up to three bonus points for relevant work experience gained within New Zealand.
Language requirements extend beyond the primary applicant, as spouses and children aged 16 and older must also prove English proficiency. Consequently, those who do not meet the language standards must pay for English tuition fees upon arrival in New Zealand.
The application process begins with the submission of an Expression of Interest (EOI). Once authorities verify eligibility, they issue an Invitation to Apply (ITA). Subsequently, candidates have four months to submit a formal application along with necessary documents, including passports, medical clearances, and police certificates.
Immigration experts advise all prospective migrants to review the criteria thoroughly before applying to avoid delays or potential rejections.
