The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has removed the license requirement for solar consumers of 25 kW and below.

On the special instructions of Federal Minister for Power Awais Leghari, the Power Division had written a letter to NEPRA regarding the license requirement matter.

According to the statement, through the letter, the Power Division had requested NEPRA to abolish the license for solar consumers of 25 kW and below.

After the Power Division’s letter, NEPRA has issued a notification removing the license requirement for solar consumers.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy had made it mandatory for all consumers installing solar systems to obtain a license from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).

On the other hand, the spokesperson of the Power Division had said that regulations regarding obtaining a NEPRA license already exist, which are related to the regulator, and DISCOs ensure implementation of these regulations.

The spokesperson said that linking the federal government’s orders with the license is completely incorrect.

The move is expected to provide relief to small-scale solar users, making it easier for households and small businesses to install solar systems without facing additional regulatory impediments. It may also boost wider adoption of renewable energy across the country.

This relief for low-capacity solar systems can help minimize pressure on the national grid, lower electricity costs for consumers, and promote environmentally friendly energy solutions in Pakistan.
