Web Desk: A US envoy has suggested that FIFA consider replacing Iran with Italy in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a report by the Financial Times. The proposal adds a new political angle to preparations for the tournament.
The envoy, Paolo Zampolli, said he discussed the idea with US President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. However, FIFA has not started any formal review of the proposal.
Meanwhile, debate over Iran’s participation has increased in recent months. President Trump raised security concerns earlier this year about Iran playing matches in U.S. cities, including Seattle and Los Angeles.
In addition, FIFA says Iran remains qualified for the tournament and is expected to compete. Iran has also confirmed its preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which the United States, Mexico, and Canada will jointly host.
Furthermore, FIFA has already rejected requests to move Iran’s matches to Mexico. This decision reinforces existing rules on scheduling and team participation. As a result, any replacement proposal would face major regulatory barriers.
Looking ahead, the tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Political discussions continue, but FIFA rules make any immediate team change highly unlikely.
