ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken notice of poor mobile internet speeds despite the 5G spectrum auction and has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to submit a detailed report.

During a briefing, the PTA chairman informed the prime minister that telecom operators are in the process of importing 4G and 5G equipment to upgrade network infrastructure. Installation is expected to begin once the equipment arrives, which may take a few months.

The briefing highlighted that improvements in telecom infrastructure will significantly enhance internet speeds. In the first phase, 5G services are expected to be launched in Islamabad and all four provincial capitals. Alongside 5G, 4G speeds are also expected to improve noticeably.

The prime minister stressed that ensuring fast and reliable internet for the public must be a top priority, adding that high-speed connectivity is essential for achieving the vision of a “Digital Nation Pakistan.”

In addition, officials shared that multiple 5G base stations were planned to be installed across major urban centers in which 30+ plus station have been operated.

These stations will form the backbone of the new network, enabling faster connectivity, lower latency, and improved coverage, with a gradual nationwide expansion expected after the initial launch.
