Iranian FM accuses US of Shifting goalposts in Historic Islamabad Talks

Web Desk: Iran said that high-level talks with the United States in Islamabad came close to producing a breakthrough agreement before collapsing over what it described as changing US demands.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi said the two sides were “inches away” from finalising an Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), following what he called the most intensive engagement between the countries in nearly five decades.

“In intensive talks at the highest level in 47 years, Iran engaged with the US in good faith to end war,” Araghchi said in a post on the social media platform X.

However, he added that the negotiations broke down at a critical stage. “When just inches away from the Islamabad MoU, we encountered maximalism, shifting goalposts, and blockade,” he said, suggesting that Washington hardened its position during the final phase of discussions.

Iran’s account indicates that negotiators had narrowed key differences and were close to formalising an understanding in Islamabad. According to Araghchi, the discussions were aimed at de-escalation and preventing further conflict, reflecting a rare window of engagement between the two long-time adversaries.

However, the Iranian foreign minister said the momentum stalled as US demands evolved, undermining progress already made at the negotiating table.

He concluded his statement with a pointed message: “Good will begets good will. Enmity begets enmity.”

The Islamabad talks marked one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between Iran and the United States in decades. Held in Pakistan’s capital, they brought senior officials from both sides together in an attempt to reduce tensions and explore a framework for stability.

The choice of Islamabad as a venue reflected Pakistan’s role as a facilitator and its longstanding position of maintaining working relations with both Tehran and Washington. Diplomats viewed the talks as an opportunity to revive dialogue after years of strained relations, intermittent backchannel contacts, and heightened regional tensions.

Despite early signs of progress, the failure to finalize the proposed MoU highlights the persistent challenges in bridging deep-rooted mistrust between the two sides. Analysts say that without sustained engagement and compromise, such diplomatic openings remain fragile and difficult to convert into lasting agreements.
