Web Desk: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a stern warning to centrally contracted players on Monday, banning all social media posts without prior approval from its media department.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the PCB sent a strict advisory to national cricketers regarding their contractual obligations. The board specifically highlighted clauses that govern digital conduct and public statements. Furthermore, the PCB reminded player managers to adhere strictly to these guidelines.
Officials emphasized that the board will not tolerate political posts under any circumstances. Consequently, any player who shares controversial content now faces a minimum fine of 10 million rupees.
This policy shift follows a high-profile incident involving national fast bowler Naseem Shah. The PCB recently imposed a 20 million rupee fine on the 23-year-old pacer after a controversial post appeared on his X account. The post referenced Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the opening ceremony of the Pakistan Super League.
The controversy began at Gaddafi Stadium last week when PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi welcomed the chief minister as the guest of honor. Shortly after the event, a quote-retweet from Naseem’s account sparked intense debate and mixed reactions among cricket fans.
Although Naseem later claimed that hackers had compromised his account, the PCB maintained its disciplinary stance. The bowler assured followers that he had successfully recovered the account after the security breach.
The PCB now demands total compliance with the social media policy outlined in central contracts. By implementing these strict measures, the board aims to prevent future diplomatic or political embarrassments involving national athletes.
Meanwhile, the cricketing community remains divided over the severity of the fines. Some analysts believe the board must protect its image, while others argue the penalties are excessive.
