Countdown begins for a historic NASA moon mission after 53 years

mission to the moon

Web Desk: NASA is preparing for humanity’s first manned mission to the moon in more than five decades, as the Artemis II crew readies for liftoff Wednesday evening. The Space Launch System, a towering 32-story rocket, will carry four astronauts into orbit. After a day circling Earth, the Orion capsule will transport them directly to the moon and back, completing the nearly 10-day journey with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, noting that both personnel and equipment are performing well. NASA officials reported that the rocket responded positively to recent repairs, while meteorologists predict favorable weather conditions for the launch window.

The mission faced multiple delays. Initially scheduled for February, Artemis II was postponed due to hydrogen fuel leaks. Although those issues were resolved, a clogged helium pressurization line required further work, keeping the rocket grounded until mid-March. The vehicle returned to the launch pad roughly a week and a half ago, with the multinational crew arriving Friday to begin final preparations.

Unlike the Apollo missions of 1968 to 1972, which included only male astronauts, Artemis II will feature a crew that includes a woman, a person of color, and a non-U.S. citizen. A Pilot emphasised the symbolic importance of the mission, saying he hopes young people see the team and feel inspired: “Girl power and that’s awesome, and that young brown boys and girls can look at me and go, ‘He looks like me and he’s doing what?’”

He also noted his hope that one day such milestones will no longer be newsworthy, as humanity moves toward inclusive exploration of space.

NASA has the first six days of April to complete the Artemis II launch before pausing operations until later in the month. The mission represents a critical step in the agency’s long-term lunar exploration strategy, aiming to extend human presence beyond low-Earth orbit.
