The issue of food waste has become a serious global concern, and a new report has identified the countries with the highest per capita food wastage.

According to TRT World, based on 2024 data, Egypt ranks at the top, where 155 kilograms of food per person is wasted annually. It is followed by Pakistan in second place, with 122 kilograms per person.

In Nigeria, the annual per capita food waste is 106 kilograms, while Mexico records 102 kilograms and Brazil 95 kilograms per person.

According to the report, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food — nearly one-third of the total food produced globally — is wasted every year.

In contrast, more than 295 million people worldwide suffer from severe hunger, while millions of children are forced to go to bed hungry every day.

The report emphasizes that effective global strategies and public awareness are urgently needed to reduce food waste.
