Web Desk:Powerful winds and heavy rain swept through Pakistan’s southern port city on Thursday, killing at least 17 people and causing widespread damage, rescue officials said.
Winds reached speeds of up to 97 kilometers per hour. They ripped roofs off homes, knocked down walls and uprooted trees and electricity poles in several neighborhoods. In Quaidabad, a house roof collapsed and killed a couple.
Casualties and Injuries
Authorities said rain-related incidents killed at least 15 people and injured more than 25 across the city. Rescue teams continued to update the toll as operations went on.
In Baldia Town, a wall near a telephone exchange collapsed. The incident killed seven people and injured nine others, rescue sources said.
Power Outages Across City
As the storm intensified, large parts of Karachi lost electricity. K-Electric cut power supply in multiple areas as a precaution. As a result, markets went dark and rescue work became more difficult.
Damage to Homes and Streets
Strong winds shattered windows in Liaquatabad and knocked down an old tree in Soldier Bazaar. In Clifton, a falling tree injured two people.
Several areas reported heavy damage. Roofs collapsed in Machar Colony, while trees fell between Quaidabad and Bhains Colony. Winds also knocked down trees and power poles in Kathore and nearby areas.
Transport and Infrastructure Hit
The storm damaged signboards along major roads, including Isa Nagri and Sharae Faisal. Authorities also took safety measures at the airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority suspended light aircraft operations. Officials also halted flight operations at Karachi airport due to bad weather.
Additional Incidents
In PECHS, a wall of a private hospital fell and damaged several vehicles. In Scheme 33, a transformer caught fire, adding to the disruption.
Rainfall and Ongoing Response
The Meteorological Department said Korangi recorded the highest rainfall at 55.6 millimeters.
Authorities urged residents to stay cautious. Meanwhile, rescue teams continued cleanup and relief work in affected areas.
