For the first time in Pakistan’s 77-year history, the production process of a 100% locally manufactured electric car has begun. The vehicle will be produced entirely with locally made parts and is expected to be significantly cheaper than other cars in the market.
This was stated by Hammad Mansoor while speaking to journalists at an iftar dinner organized by Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority.
According to him, the Made-in-Pakistan EV car is expected to be introduced in June or July this year. To encourage local automotive manufacturers and promote localization, the government plans to reduce taxes on vehicles in the upcoming federal budget.
Mansoor said that the plant for the locally produced EV will be established in Lahore for the first time. The price of the vehicle is expected to be less than one million rupees, making it easier for motorcycle users to shift toward cars.
He added that the 100% locally built electric car will be capable of traveling 180 to 200 kilometers on a single charge. Under the local automotive policy, the Prime Minister has decided to fully support local auto manufacturers. The government also plans to achieve full localization of vehicles and export them internationally at competitive prices in the future.
The CEO of the Engineering Development Board said that the monopoly of large automobile companies in Pakistan is gradually ending, which can be seen from the declining trend in vehicle prices.
He explained that electric vehicles mainly rely on three key components — lithium batteries, chargers, and controllers, all of which are now being developed locally. The EV car will also be capable of traveling 180–200 kilometers on a single charge
