Islamabad: The United Nations report has revealed that the freedom enjoyed by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Afghanistan has led to increased tensions in Pakistan, undermining the narrative of the Afghan Taliban.

According to the UN Security Council report, the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan is a regional concern, and attacks originating from Afghanistan into Pakistan have increased.

The report highlights that claims by Afghan authorities that no terrorist groups were operating from Afghanistan were not recognized by any member state. The TTP has enjoyed greater freedom and facilitation in Afghanistan, which has resulted in more attacks against Pakistan and heightened tension.

The Security Council report also confirms that Al-Qaeda has maintained a presence in Afghanistan, providing training and guidance, particularly to the TTP. Reports indicate that Al-Qaeda’s leadership for the subcontinent is based in Kabul, raising concerns about possible external attacks.

Furthermore, the report states that ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K) is active in northern Afghanistan near the Pakistan border and has considerable capabilities. Weapons left behind by US/NATO forces in Afghanistan have increased the lethality of TTP attacks. The TTP has also utilized modern weapons, night vision devices, and drone systems in their operations.
