Pakistan urges UN to sanction BLA over terrorism threats

⏱ 2 minute read

Web desk: Pakistan has urged the United Nations Security Council to approve its pending request to add the banned Balochistan Liberation Army to the global sanctions list. The demand was raised during a Security Council session on threats to international peace and security caused by terrorism.

While addressing the meeting Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan proxy militant groups gained new momentum. He stated that these groups operate with foreign backing and financial support.

He said such groups include Fitna al Khawarij Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan and Fitna al Hindustan Balochistan Liberation Army along with its Majeed Brigade. According to him these groups now operate with near total impunity from Afghan soil.

He further claimed that open support from Pakistan’s eastern neighbor has enabled these groups to carry out brutal attacks inside Pakistan. As a result he warned that the threat extends beyond Pakistan and endangers regional peace.

Asim Iftikhar Ahmad informed the council that just last week the banned BLA claimed responsibility for multiple attacks across Balochistan. These attacks killed 48 innocent civilians. Pakistan described the incidents as one of the worst examples of terrorism in recent times.

Therefore Pakistan urged the international community and especially the Security Council to take decisive action against terrorist groups backed from abroad. Pakistan stressed that placing the BLA on the sanctions list is essential for global counterterrorism efforts.
