Web Desk: The US State Department has announced a temporary suspension of immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries. The decision will apply immediately and affect people seeking permanent residence in the United States.

The suspension targets countries whose citizens rely heavily on US government welfare programs after arriving in America. The State Department said the restriction will stay in place until officials confirm that new immigrants will not place extra pressure on public resources.

In its statement, the department explained that the move aims to protect American taxpayers and preserve the country’s welfare system. Officials stressed that the policy focuses on financial responsibility and long-term sustainability.

US authorities said the decision will impact dozens of countries, including Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Russia, Afghanistan, Brazil, and Nigeria. Other affected nations include Bangladesh, Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bhutan, the Bahamas, Bosnia, and Barbados.

More countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Cuba, Colombia, Cambodia, Georgia, Guatemala, and Fiji will also face the temporary ban. The State Department added that it is reviewing support measures to guide affected applicants and provide clear instructions during the suspension.
