A leader of Bangladesh’s 2024 uprising died in Singapore on Friday after suffering injuries in an assassination attempt, officials confirmed.

A week ago, masked attackers shot 32-year-old student leader and spokesperson for student protest group Inqilab Moncho, Sharif Osman Hadi. The incident occurred when he was coming out of a mosque in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.

Singapore’s foreign ministry said, “Despite the best efforts of the doctors…, Mr Hadi succumbed to his injuries.” However, the Singapore government assured its help and cooperation to the Bangladesh government in this matter.

Inqilab Moncho announced the death of Sharif Osman Had on Facebook, as”in the struggle against Indian hegemony, Allah has accepted the great revolutionary Osman Hadi as a martyr.”

According to the student protest group Inqilab Moncho, Hadi was a candidate in the February 2026 election, the first parliamentary polls after the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The interim prime minister of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, also confirmed the death of the student leader and said, “I express my deepest condolences. His demise is an irreparable loss for the nation.”

Supporters of the July Oikya staged a road blockade in Dhaka, as they marched toward the Indian High Commission, calling for the extradition of individuals accused of attempting to kill Osman Hadi, spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and a prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency.

March led by student leaders

The demonstration, led by Social Welfare Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), began at Rampura Bridge around 3 p.m. and moved toward North Badda. Confronted by police, protesters halted in front of Hossain Market and sat on the road, chanting slogans.

Zubair addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the march was intended as a peaceful expression of dissent. “We are not here to attack the Indian High Commission. Our goal is to send a message that no one can impose dominance over Bangladesh,” he said. He warned, however, that attempts to assert hegemonic control over the country would not be tolerated.
